Abstract

Theterm heart rate describes the frequency of the cardiac cycle in termsof number of contractions (beats) of the cardiac muscle in a minute(60 seconds). Therefore, it is expressed in terms of beats perminutes. Human heart rate is determined by age and level of activity.The purpose of this experiment is to compare the differences inheartbeats in two different activities. The aim is to determine howdifferent activities or positions impact heart rate. It washypothesized that the heart rate during an examination time willincrease in the same way and to the same level with the heart ratewhen driving through traffic. Using a study population of 361students from the university, it was found that the difference in thet values was larger than the set standard (t=0.15) for test. Thismeans that the two activities differ significantly in terms of theirload on the body. It was found that taking an exam places a higherload on the heart than driving through traffic. We found that thenervous system is highly aroused when taking an exam than whendriving through traffic.

Human heart rate is determined by age and level of activity.For instance, at rest, an adult person has a heart rate of about 70and 75 beats per minute in males and females respectively. Instandard form, the reference range is between 60 and 100 beats perminute. A popular and easy way of measuring heart rate is recordingof pulse rate. It increases significantly in some conditions such asduring activities and when frightened.

Purpose

Thepurpose of this experiment is to compare the differences inheartbeats in two different activities. The aim is to determine howdifferent activities or positions impact heart rate.

Hypothesis

Ihypothesize that the heart rate during an examination time willincrease in the same way and to the same level with the heart ratewhen driving through traffic.

Expectedresults

Itis expected that the test will support the hypothesis, with the tvalues of the two variables (heart rate when driving through trafficand heart rate when taking an exam) to be equal or lower than the sett standard of t=0.15 for the test.

Materialsand methods

Thisexperiment was carried our using a statistical approach, which meansthat it is basically a quantitative study design. The studypopulation was some 361 students from the university. Students wereboth males and females and were aged between 18 and 38 years. Thestudents were asked to record their age, gender, height and weight.In addition, they were asked to provide additional information abouttheir diet and lifestyle such as drinking coffee, tea, soda, energydrinks and smoking. In addition, they were asked to provideinformation on whether they do eat dinner and breakfast.

Heartrates during examination and driving through traffic were recordedagainst other details for each student. Microsoft Excel program wasused to determine the mean for each variable (heart rates whendriving through traffic and heart rates when taking exams). Theprogram also determined the mean values of the two variables, the sumof differences and the T value for the two samples. The standard meanvalue for the sample hypothesis was set an 0.15.

Results

TheMS Excel program indicated that the mean value of ‘heart beat whentaking an exam’ (Data set one or “A”) was 81.81. In addition,the difference of mean for A was 3.19. On the other hand, the programindicated that the difference of mean for data set two (heart ratewhen driving through traffic) was 9.50 while its mean was 80.51.

Thus,the T value for the two variables was 0.20, which was much higherthan the standard t value set for the test at 0.14. This means thatthe two set values had a difference of 0.05, with the results fortaking an exam pulse rate being higher than that of driving throughtraffic heart rate.

Discussion

Thedifference in the t values is larger than the set standard (t=0.15)for test. This means that the two activities differ significantly interms of their load on the body. It implies that taking an examplaces a higher load on the heart than driving through traffic. Italso indicates that the nervous system is highly aroused when takingan exam than when driving through traffic. Therefore, the studyhypothesis “I hypothesize that the heart rate during an examinationtime will increase in the same way and to the same level with theheart rate when driving through traffic” has not been supported.

Thesefindings are consistent with a number of studies previously done onthese topics. For instance, a study by Zhang, Su, Peng, Yang andCheng (2011) attempted to describe how exam anxiety induces anincrease in both blood pressure and heart rates in college studentsprior and during examination time. The study found that a number offactors, including smoking, affect the level of heart rates and bloodpressure. Nevertheless, the anxiety caused by examination was foundto have a significantly large impact on the heart rates and bloodpressure levels in all students, regardless of whether they weresmokers or not. An increase in the heart rate while driving underconditions that raise anxiety has also been studied. For instance,the study by Mullen, Faull, Jones and Kingston (2012) examined theimpact of anxiety when race-driving on the drivers’ heart rates. Itwas found that the anxiety increased both the heart rate and levelsof blood pressure before and during the task.

Conclusion

Mostprevious studies have not attempted to compare the results of heartrate comparisons when taking the two tasks. In this study, an attemptto use empirical study to fill this gap has been taken. Although thisexperiment and the results from previous studies have shown that bothtasks increase heart rate, the current results have refuted the studyhypothesis. This study indicates that the two tasks do not producethe same impact on the nervous system and the heart rate, withexamination having a higher impact on the heart rate than drivingthrough traffic among the student population.
