Does Culture Shock Affect People’s Lives

An Annotated Bibliography

Cultureshock is the impact or the effect of moving from a familiar cultureor environment into unfamiliar one. With globalization, people arebecoming global citizens. Millions of students, workers as well asprofessionals leave their country to study or work abroad. Theeffects of culture shock are evident. This is one of the reasons thatI am interested in pursuing this issue. In addition, I have apersonal experience with culture shock. Having moved to a foreigncountry at one time, I experienced a very difficult time adapting tothe new culture. This has been my motivation to exploring this field.

Thethesis question leading to my investigation is: Does culture shockinfluence or affect people’s lives? I carried out my annotatedbibliography as from February 28, 2014 to March 30, 2014. I usedthree sources which include two books and one peer reviewed journalarticle.

Asada, Sadao. Culture shock andJapanese-American relations historical essays. Columbia:University of Missouri Press, 2007. Print.

In this book, the author examines thehistorical relations between the United States and Japan. His targetaudience is scholars and leaders in both political and corporatesector. The analysis of the happenings between the two countriesbetween 1890 and 2006 is presented in essays which help unearthimportant elements of culture shock and the way it influencesrelationships. The influence of Alfred Mahan (a US naval captain anda historian credited as the most significant American strategist ofthe 19th Century) on the Japanese navy, and American viewof Japan in the 1920’s has been useful in portraying the theme ofthis book. In subsequent essays, within the book, the progressiveheat between the two states and the root of the Pacific War fromJapanese’s navy perspective has been explored. After nine years ofstudy in America, the author himself returned to his home-Japan wherehe experienced his personal reverse culture shock (Asada 1). Heprovides insights into why people on the far end of the pacificperceive things differently and adapts their views to variouspurposes.

This is a credible source because Sadao Asadais a recognized Japanese historian and a scholar of DoshishaUniversity in Kyoto. In addition, the author uses Japanese sourceswhich are out of reach of Western scholars in giving a host ofinspiring knowledge for non-Japanese readers. One of the limitationsof the book is the fact that it was published a decade ago.

This source is useful for my research questionbecause it provides a different perspective of culture shock, notavailable in other sources. Introducing the concept of historicalrelationship between Japan and the US strengthens my thesis.

The book offers an extensive understanding ofthe importance of effective cross cultural awareness and crosscultural communication by individuals working in the internationalmilieu. This is an area of great interest as the authors cite theexpanding global markets of China and India (Hurn and Barry 122-225).In addition, barriers to effective cross cultural communication arediscussed, with practical strategies to overcoming them provided inthe book. Employees seeking to work in this and other internationalenvironments will benefit from this source.

This source is credible as the authors usetheir own experiences in more than 60 countries across the globe andfrom discussions with international students and professionalcolleagues, which shows the wide experience of the authors in thefield, besides their professional credibility. The source is alsocredible as it was published within the last 12 months by PalgravePublishers which is a credible publisher. The limitation of the bookis comes from the fact that it concentrates largely on communicationacross cultures and the way it impacts employees, rather thanelaborate on the broader picture of culture shock.

The source is useful for my research questionas it provides an important perspective of cross culturalcommunication and culture shock. It integrated students’experiences and those of professionals in foreign cultures, whichwill shed light to the influence of culture shock on how individualsinteract and cope. Students and professionals seeking opportunitiesabroad will benefit greatly from this knowledge.

Karen van der Zeel &amp Jan Pieter vanOudenhoven. “Culture Shock or Challenge? The Role of Personality asa Determinant of Intercultural Competence.”Journal ofCross-Cultural Psychology, 44.6 (2013): 928-940. Print.

This peer reviewed journal seeks to expound onthe psychological perspective of culture shock. It is targeted topsychologists who are interested in understanding culture shock. Theauthors, Karen and Jan Pieter give a theoretical basis for theempirical relation between personality and intercultural successindicators in regard to the Affect (A), Behavior (B) and Cognition(C) – model of culture shock. The authors argue in regard to Affectthat intellectual traits can be distinguished based on whether theyinfluence individuals be sensitive to challenge or threat (Karen &ampJan Pieter 928). Whereas stress-associated traits (flexibility,emotional stability) are associated to lower tendency to view arational situation as threatening, social-perceptual traits(open-mindedness, social initiative) may influence individuals toview its challenging elements and respond with positive affect.

This is a credible source because it is a peerreviewed journal, seeking evidence from research and additionalresources. Besides being recently published, the authors usesufficient sources including primary and secondary sources to supporttheir current study. Limitation of this source is the use ofpsychological terminologies in explaining culture shock, which maynot be suitable for scholars with no prior knowledge in psychology.

The source is useful in supporting my researchquestion as it offers a unique direction to the understanding ofculture shock. The psychological perspective given in this articlewill be helpful in explaining how people respond or react to culturaldiversity. Scholars are largely to benefit from this study.
