Asone of the most prominent European artist in the post-war times, jeanDubuffet is associated with a unique artistic style for insane arts.He has a style that involves expensive figures, a loose drawingtechnique and highly textured canvases. His art work is wellorganized and showcased at the Dubuffet`s Museum of the Insane. As anoutsider artist, the art he represents is the art of the mentally illwhich makes his work encompass the cultural of text of a typicaloutsider art (Rexer, 2005). This paper will explore the elements ofoutsider art and the facts of the Dubuffet`s Museum of the Insane aswell as his artistic work.

Outsiderart is a phrase created by Jean Dubuffet to refer to unrefined orrough art that was created differently from the standards of mainstream art. By focusing on the art that is outside the main streamscene, Dubuffet established an entire collection of work that definedthe understanding of outsider art (MacGregor, 1989). Some of the mainworks of outsider art that he created include the children andinsane-asylum inmates. The art category of outsider art is successfuland attracts well established art lovers in events such as the annualOutsider Art Fair that has been showcasing since 1993 in New York(Rexer, 2005).

Theassociation of outsider art with mental insanity is what makes thecategory and the Dubuffet museum of mentally ill relevant todiscover. Most of these artists demonstrate some insane or extrememental cases. The category typically adopts unconventional ideas andstyles that are beyond the confines of conventional world of art(Michael &amp Metcalf, 1993). In addition, the artists that createoutsider art do not come into any professional or workingrelationship with the conventional artists. Moreover, the works ofart of some of the artists in the outside art category is mostlydiscovered after their death (Peiry, 2012). This makes Outsider Art abroad category of non-specific works of art.

Despitehaving a number of artists that created works of art that can beconsidered as “outsider arts,” it was Jean Dubuffet who exploredthe field and identified the uninfluenced and original creation ofthis art was not just for the mentally ill (MacGregor, 1989). Herealized that it a spontaneous category with numerous art creationsthat were associated by several artists. Artists that portrayed the“outsider art” creations include Paul Klee, Franz Marc and MaxErnst. After establishing the Compagnie de l`Art Brut, Dubuffetencouraged other untrained artists to showcase their creations. Thisbrought together artists with inventiveness and extreme individualitytogether by bringing their works of art to form a gallery.

Thefirst name of this genre or gallery of works of art was “Art Brut”to mean that the collection was not conventional as per the culture(Peiry, 2012). The collection involved works of art from both theuntrained artists and those who had those with no contact with theworld of arts. These artists included isolates, psychiatric patients,fierce individualists and mediums (Peiry, 2012). When this gallerywas opened, it included art work with pure, powerful and meaningfulworks of art that was not courted by the culture of conventional art. This is because the art was created to fulfill inner need and forpure individual satisfaction and not due to monetary motivation asseen in conventional art.

Asthe Dubuffet’s collection of art work gained recognition, thenumber of pieces included in the gallery increased. By 1979, thecollection had several thousands of pieces that established thegallery in the Collection de l`Art Brut museum located in Lausannetown of Switzerland (Peiry, 2012). The growth of this collection, themuseum and the work of Dubuffet attracted study by roger cardinal, anEnglish art researcher who led to the term “outsider art”(Michael &amp Metcalf, 1993). However, this was not the only work ofart that represented this category many other artists from Americaportrayed the same trends. For instance, Henry Darger had suchcollections that fall in the category of “outsider art.”

OutsiderArt category is now an established category of contemporary art thatcovers large parts of Europe and also united states (Rexer, 2005).Currently, outsiders are giving exhibitions of Outsider art that areheld in major museums in addition to the Collection de l`Art Brut(Michael &amp Metcalf, 1993). In addition to this, many museums thatspecialize in the art. Currently, the work of art displayed at themuseum is created by people that do not get motivation from social orcultural indoctrinations. In most cases, the works of art is createdby people with extreme mental conditions.

Asa unique collection of art, Jean Dubuffet established his museum thatshowcased a collection of art that was outside the confines of theconventional art. The work of art was considered “outside Art”due to the unconventional nature of the art from artists who had nocontact with mainstream art or professional art work. This gave theDubuffet`s Museum of the Insane the name Collection de l`Art Brut andidentity. Despite the unprofessionalism of the artists involved, thecategory and the museum have grown to be part of the contemporaryworld of art.
