Severalauthors have attempted to provide a definition for aninterdisciplinary healthcare team as a group of individuals fromvarious disciplines who work collaboratively in their respectiveexpertise to provide care to the patients (Leathard, 2013, p. 5). Inthe United Kingdom, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary areperceived as something that refer to a group of people with diversetraining backgrounds who are sharing the same objectives yet create avaried but complementary contribution (Leathard, 2013, p. 5). Forsome authors, ‘inter’ literally means working in collaborationwith other groups or interacting with other professionals to achievea common goal (Leathard, 2013, p. 5).

Thebasic knowledge required of members of the health team includespathophysiology, human growth and development, epidemiology andpharmacology, and a lot more (Arnold and Boggs, 2013, p. 2). Thedevelopmental theory is needed in maintaining the truth of anydiscipline. Nursing developmental theory was considerably dormantprior to the middle of the twentieth era. During the middle part ofthe era, graduate students offered ideas and struggled to comprehendthe language as well as the meaning of concepts (Arnold and Boggs,2013, p. 2).

Qualitycare for people remains to be the top priority among nurses (Meleis,2011, p. 2). This goal became more urgent due to increasing diversityand better awareness of the changing needs of the public, thecontradicting priorities in health care systems, and the emergentcosts as well as reimbursement issues that insurance companies,patients, the health care industry, and health care professionals(Meleis, 2011, p. 2).

Forpeople in UK, services are offered in an emergency as well as therapid accessibility of hospital, high quality ambulance, and surgicalservices (Glasby, 2012, p. 1). For others, easy access to healthservices has been life changing whether through a serious accident,birth of a baby, or death of a partner (Glasby, 2012, p. 1).

Thispaper presents my personal reflection on a self-development actionplan which I intend to pursue in order to enhance myInterprofessional working in the future. In addition, I alsoreflected on how to best deal with cultural diversity in theworkplace especially in working with other professionals who comefrom different backgrounds or dealing with patients and theirfamilies who are of different races.

APersonal Reflection on a Self-development Action Plan

Inidentifying how I could best develop myself to enhance my future IPworking, I reflected upon my personal characteristics and created aplan on how I can use my characteristic traits or qualities to helpthe team improve the quality of care provided to the patients. Inparticular, I am a rational being. As a rational individual, I have aproblem solving temperament, particularly if the problem has to dowith the various complex systems that make up the world around us. Ican also tackle problems in organic systems such as plants andanimals, or in mechanical systems such as railroads and computers, orin social systems such as families and companies and governments. Inmy training to be mental health nurse, I believe that my problemsolving skills have been helpful in analyzing cases. It is these samecharacteristics that have also been helpful in my work for NationalHealth Service. I am an analytical being. I tend to brood over thingsthat I do not understand and find my way to master them. Over time, Irealized that in working with the group and in dealing with patients,I tend to analyze the health condition of the patient and think ofways on how I can best manage his or her condition. I then share myideas with the team. I love solving problems and doing systemsanalysis. I am also an independent person, very determined, and fullof ingenuity. I have an even temper. My logical mind is what I ammost proud of. Giving up is not my cup of tea. I tend to make use ofmy time in a productive way. I also act based on my emotions and mylogic. I weigh things before diving into them. In working with thegroup, it is important to have a sense of determination in achievingthe goals. No matter how complex a case maybe, it is theresponsibility of health professionals to be determined enough inseeking the best possible solution to the patient’s condition.

Asa person, I consider my logical mind as my strength. It is said thatthe human body is created in such a way that the mind is above theheart so that we can sort things out without being emotional. Whilebeing emotional is good, logic works best for me. Having a logicalmind is necessary in developing quality decisions in healthcare. Inaddition, I believe that people are unique. There are times whenclash of personalities happen because of failure to extend morepatience and understanding through communication.

Tofully improve myself in order to best manage working inInterprofessional setting, I plan to do the following:

  1. Knowing oneself and seeking self-improvement

Forme to be able to get to know myself better and seek improvement, Ineed to understand my attributes. This can be made possible throughformal classes, self-study, reflection, and interaction with otherpeople. Through formal classes, I will be able to obtain thenecessary skills and knowledge. In addition, I will be able to findout how to appropriately respond and mingle with other individuals.

  1. Strive harder to become technically proficient

Intoday’s very competitive world, I must know the skills and tasksneeded to progress my career. For me to do this I need to develop myknowledge in technical aspects and only then will I be able tounderstand how things are done in the technical world.

  1. Become accountable for my own decisions and actions

Ineed to understand that whatever happens, I have the fullresponsibility. I will take necessary corrective actions beforeproceeding to the next agenda.

  1. Develop sound and sensible decisions

Forme to be able to develop sound and sensible decisions, I need to makeuse of good decision-making, problem solving, and planning tools.

  1. Get to know the people.

Establishingprofessional relationships with people will give me the opportunityto get to know them better. This will also allow me to discover theirpositive and negative traits.

  1. Obtain more knowledge

Obtainingmore knowledge is only possible through attending formal classes. Iplan to finish my degree and after which, I will continue to pursuefor higher education.

  1. Attend seminars on self-discovery

Seminarsare helpful in making me fully aware of things necessary to become agood self-master.

Iwill continue to keep in touch with my other colleagues in the team.I will observe the best characteristic traits of those around me andtry to put them into practice. Through this, I can help myselfimprove on the many aspects that would be pleasing to other people aswell. I can only do this my finding a mentor. This can be someonefrom my workplace or outside of work. My mentor will counsel me andwill be my guiding force in taking a positive direction. I willsurround myself with like-minded individuals so that we can benefitfrom each other in terms of career advancement and self-improvement.

Afterhaving accomplished the strategies mentioned, I will encourage myselfto be happy and love my work as this is my stepping stone for futureendeavors. If ever I encounter negative circumstances, I willimmediately act upon this and make sure that this will not dampen myspirit. From this day on, I will be grateful for every opportunitiesand challenges that will come my way. Next strategy that I am goingto take is to become the most sought after employee in my workplace.I will do this by keeping track of all my accomplishments, knowing myweaknesses and devising ways on how to turn these weaknesses intostrengths, and maintaining an optimistic attitude. I will make surethat all decisions will be focused on what is best for the costumersor clients. When I see any of my colleagues struggling, I will helpbuild them up by giving and sharing with them my time and talents.

InterprofessionalWorking in Diverse Setting

Inthe article titled “Building a Successful Team throughCollaboration”, Jane Swanson discusses the approaches in creating asuccessful interdisciplinary team. The author clearly emphasized thatleaders have no control over the team but that leaders have thecapacity to strongly influence the team. Swanson illustrated thethings necessary in building collaboration. She made use of JohnGardner’s lists of critical skills essential for successfulleadership in an Interprofessional team. The list includes ability toexercise non-judicial power, agreement building or negotiationskills, networking, goal-setting ability, and flexibility inrelationships (Swanson, 1997, p. 71). Often, working in a team can bedaunting particularly when change is called for. Swanson was able toexperience this for herself after being assigned in an ambulatorycare unit where none of the nurses have ever experienced working insuch unit before. In my case, this also often happens especially whenthe health team is pondering upon the best action to take concerningthe patient’s condition. At one time, the team had a communityoutreach. It was through this experience that I learned theimportance of Interprofessional collaboration and partnership insafeguarding the needs of the children. However, one thing that canpose problem in this situation is the fact that members of the teamhave varied personality traits.

Personalityconflicts can pose negative impacts on the relationships of people.The inevitability of conflicts occurs everywhere. This is becausepeople have different personalities and the diversity inpersonalities is intermingled in a workplace. Diversityin background creates conflict. Unsettled differences can createconflict in the workplace. Whentwo personalities do not jive or get along together, there is atendency to overpower one another. Hence, communication always leadsto misunderstanding. Personality conflicts cause an individual tofind mistakes or errors to another individual. Those in conflictsfight for their personal beliefs and often neglect the importance offamily goals as well as organization goals. When conflicts remainunresolved, this brings unhappiness, hopelessness, dissatisfactions,emotional imbalance, quarrels, depression, fight, and anger. Theseill-feelings can lead to disassociation and hatred with others.Further, conflicts may impact the community, society, and workplaceas well as health environment. Although personally, this has not yethappened in the team, it is important that in Interprofessionaldealings, conflicts must be avoided.

Inthe health field, conflicts arise when there is miscommunicationwhich can lead to failure in the accomplishment of maximum patientresults. Individualswho are mindful and are humble enough to admit that each one hasdiverse ways of managing situation, everything else in the course ofcommunication and interaction will build a better understanding.Establishing an operative conflict resolution set is a vitalcomponent in the health force. Competitive tensions, opposingpositions, pride, power struggles, ego, performance discrepancies,jealousy, compensation issues, etc. are some of the roots ofconflicts. To manage conflict, it is important to understand whatacceptable behaviour is. When talking to both parties, behaviour mustbe the focus of discussion and not the characters of the individualsinvolve. Issues must be resolved one at a time. Other matters must bediscussed at another time in order to avoid clouding the discussion.Having the ability to handle conflicts can lead to a better and moreharmonious relationship.

Justas the patient’s health and well-being is the ultimate goal ofdelivering healthcare services, nurses are pressed to demonstrate theoutcomes of their care and provide evidence of the effectiveness oftheir department. I learned the importance of effective communicationnot only in dealing with my colleagues but most importantly indealing with the people I am rendering my service to. Througheffective communication, the needs of the patients are properlyaddressed. In my experience with the elderly patients, working withgroup of professionals has enabled the team to cover the necessarytreatment approach for them. Basically, elderly people need moralsupport especially when they are at the terminal stage of their life.

Anotherfactor that is very common in the health team is the diversity inbackground or at times culture. Flexibility and open-mindednessenable an individual to focus on diversity in human services.Learning to focus on individual differences can promote anenvironment of peace and respect. People in the workplace must strivehard to seek for characteristic traits or skills that are commonand/or different among other people. If only people in the societywould learn to accept diverseness and eliminate discriminatory acts,all industries, including human services will be able to reachimmense heights.

Inworking with group of professionals belonging to diverse backgrounds,it is almost often impossible for one not to overlap with the role ofthe other even if that person did not intend to do it.Misunderstanding takes place. Nonetheless, no matter how diverse ateam is when there is mutual respect and proper channeling ofcommunication, the team will be able to successfully work on thedifferences and render the best quality of service to the patients.With this, the health team remains intact and the patients are givenproper accommodation and attention.
