This paper will discuss the different aspects ofcontinued parental involvement in the learning process of theirchildren. It will also highlight on different activities thatpractitioners can do to promote parental involvement, will providetips for parental involvement promotion, and some methods ofevaluating the effectiveness of the involvement.

Methodsto Identify Needs and Goals

Teacherscan use some methods in order to identify the goals and needs ofparents and their children. Some of these methods are such as urgingparents to be their children’s advocates and ask repeatedly to knowwhat areas his/her child require guidance. This way, the parent islikely to understand the strengths and weaknesses of his/her child inorder to guide him safely. Another proactive method is establishing aschool-wide behavior support system with elements such as rules andteaching appropriate behavior, intervention plans, and positivereinforcement for behavior as well as teaching social skills willhelp parents identify their needs and goals. In addition,practitioners can teach parents on developing resiliency skills andconsistency so that parents can be very consistent and stubborn asfar as their goals and needs are concerned. They can do this by getting involved in some things such asaccompanying the class of their child while on a field trip, helpingin computer, or science lab experiments. They can also help intutoring their children and helping finish their homework,volunteering in fundraisers, as well as share their history, workexperiences and other stories that can help the child in his/herfield of study (National Parent Teacher Association, 2001).

Usingthe suggested methods above, parents are likely to feel part of thewhole system of education with their children, and will surely getinvolved with the activities and events (National Parent TeacherAssociation, 2001).

  • Develop a good communication habit with the teachers and letting the teachers know that you wish them to contact you immediately the child needs something.

  • Know the friends that your child hangs out with, and their families

  • Limit the amount of time your child spends watching T.V and playing computer games

  • Train your child to use problem-solving skills when in difficult situations, whether they are at home, or in school

  • Seek help when your child is struggling about something

  • Talk to your child about school achievements and possible problems every day.

  • Monitor the attendance of the child in school to ensure that you are aware of the number of days your child is absent from school

  • Help your child explore career options at his disposal in relation to his field of study

  • Identify the post-secondary goals and objectives for your child so that it becomes easy to guide him towards realizing the goals.

  • In case a child’s personality fall out with that of the teacher, it is the duty of the parent to meet with the teacher to discuss the way out and solve the problems that might have occurred

  • Contact the school guidance and counseling department in case you doubt your child has a problem with drug abuse

  • Consider alternative school setting suppose you or your child believe that the goals and objectives might be hard to realize in the present setting

  • Encourage your child to search for extracurricular activities that would be of interest to the child and helpful.

Thereare many essential methods of evaluation, one would use indetermining the effectiveness of a program in the education sector.For this program, portfolio assessment would be the best to producethe best result that would explain the effectiveness of continuedparental involvement in the educations system with their children. Inthis method, the parent and teacher will compile the student’sperformance over time. Achievements could be in class work,extracurricular activities and any other activities performed by thechild. Using the compiled report would be easy to determine if thechild is improving or not when the parent gets involved more in thechild’s education (National Parent Teacher Association, 2001).

Finally,suppose there be a breakdown in communication with the parents,guidance and counseling would be very essential for guiding the childinto repairing the broken communication with the parent. The childwill be required to use problem-solving skills in order to solve andmake right the situation with his/her parent. Lastly, another methodthat could be essential in case of a communication breakdown is useof dialogue to deal with the situation, bring the two partiestogether, and reason together.
