TheRaleigh Community of Memphis is a community of approximately 40,000which is resident on the North central to Northeast part of Memphis,Tennessee. Place in a historically, geographically and culturallyrich region of the state of Tennessee, this region has in the recentpast experienced varying cultural and social-economic turbulence,leading to a significant efflux of businesses (James,1990).The region, however, has undergone, in the last decade, extensivereconstruction aimed at re-inventing the community’s lost glory(Simpson, 2013). The article will discuss the Raleigh Community, inthe context of the wider Memphis and state of Tennessee.
TheRaleigh community 38128 is all that area designated by the ZIP code38128 and covering an area of approximately 22.6 square miles, at35°7′3″N 89°58′16″W.It is located in the Northern part of Memphis. It is geographicallylocated in a sub-urban setting, forming part of the larger Memphismetropolis (Bond & Sherman, 2003). It is named after a town thatused to be in roughly its current location. The Frasyer community isto the left of Raleigh, while the Wolf River is to its south. Itborders Bartlett to the East, and its generally elevated topology isthe northern extremes of the Memphis metropolis. Interstate 40 is tothe south, and forms a natural boundary to the region’s southwest.
Raleigh’spopulation is estimated to be 47,000 people, all living in urban orsuburban settings. Because of its urban setting, the populationdensity is 2091 people per square mile, slightly smaller than that oflarger Memphis (2,335).
Themedian age in the area is 29.6 years, with black only populationbeing dominant at more than 60%. White only population is second witha prevalence of roughly 30 %. The remaining percentage is distributedamong Asian and Hispanic populations and a minute presence of otherraces. The female population is higher than male population, at25,721 against 21,561. About 53% of households are family households,and the median family size is 2.9 for Raleigh. The larger percentageof people living in Raleigh (67%) were born here, and about 23% ofall households are single-mother households. About 28% of householdsare married couple. In education, 29% of the population has notattained high school education, while 15% are high school graduates,13% are university graduates, 5% have masters and doctors degrees. In Raleigh, the unemployment rate is 10%, with 7.5% of males workingin management jobs, 2.4% in business and financial operations, 18% inservice jobs, 16% in sales and 12% in construction. 35% of women workin sales, 25% in services and 9% in healthcare jobs (Cityof Memphis, 2014).

Themedian household income in 2011 for Raleigh was $4,454, higher thanthat of the larger Memphis ($34,960). The region also has a highermedian rent than the larger Memphis at $659 compared to $591. Theaverage household uses utility gas (50%) as the primary fuel, while43% use electricity. The house prices in Raleigh average $130,000,much lower than the Tenesee average at $189,000. The averagehousehold has 1.7 cars, slightly less than that of Memphis at 1.8.The median rent house in this neighborhood has 4 bedrooms (3428),while the median owner occupied house has 6 rooms (2,800) (Cityof Memphis, 2014).
Raleighcommunity is positioned at a higher altitude overlooking the Memphismetropolis. It has a subtropical climate characterized by hot andhumid climates. This region has a full season cycle, withtemperatures ranging from 500Fin January to 920Fin July. It has an average precipitation of 1364mm (Cityof Memphis, 2014).
Raleigharea, located in Memphis, is an ideal area for settlement for variousreasons. Firstly, it is an area with a higher median income andinfrastructural development than the rest of Memphis, and is slightlyless crowded than the larger Memphis. The community has variouspoints of attraction including the Raleigh community center withgymnasiums, meeting rooms, pools, playground, tennis court, acomprehensive health and fitness center, dancing and arts units,social development programs with regular guest speakers and dozens ofspecial events.
Inaddition, it borders the larger metropolis with attractions such asthe Mississippi River which hosts dozens of all year recreationalactivities, the National Civil Rights movement museum housed inLorraine Motel, the Memphis Zoo with more than 3,000 animals, thePink Palace Museum with a rich account of Memphis’ history, and theAutoZone Park for baseball fans, with a dedicated stadium for AAAminor baseball league team. In addition, the Raleigh neighborhood isassociated with the larger Memphis culture of music and performingarts, with such renowned personalities as Elvis Presley, JustinTimberlake, Aretha Franklin, and Booker T. Jones among others havinggrown up around the area. It is associated with the culturalizationof the American South identity, mostly advanced through music andart. It also is associated with Martin Luther King Jr. Beale Streetand Graceland, both iconic streets in the US, are located here(Simpson, 2013).
TheMemphis neighborhood has also been identified as one of themetropolis with ‘emerging downtown areas’ with respect tocultural and economic r-organization. This is likely to place thetown more highly with regard to living preference in the future. Themetro area, once ranked among the highest in terms of crime, is on arapid re-organization towards safety and security, and is likely toturn around the national perception regarding Tennessee (Simpson,2013).
Memphisarea is the largest metropolis in Tennessee with 655,000 people. Thestate is the 17thmost populous in the nation, as well as the 36thlargest. It has a population of 6.4 million people, and Nashville,the second largest town, has 624,000 people. Tennessee is a uniquecounty in US due to cultural and geographical reasons (James,1990).Firstly, the state boasts of a subtropical climate characterized byhot humid weather, making it ideal for visitation in a wider range ofmonths than other areas. In addition, it boasts the presence of theMississippi River, the presence of which brings tourists to theregion. It has a wide variety of geographical attractions, includinghigh mountains and rivers, and many historically significant points.Tennessee’s economy is ranked 36thin the nation, lower than the national average in terms of medianincome (Cityof Memphis, 2014).
Itis an important education state with more than 100 universities, aswell as a key sporting state especially with regard to Baseball andsoccer, with more than 15 major team’s resident here. Thus,Tennessee offers a mixed blend of affordable lifestyle, a goodclimate, as well as many geographical and cultural attractions forresidents (Bond & Sherman, 2003).
RaleighCommunity and State needs
TheRaleigh community is a predominantly black community area in alargely white state. It has been popularized for issues ofinsecurity, poverty, and poor health. Mental health is one of themost prevalent health issues affecting the community. Data from theShelby County Health department indicates that 53% of residents havemental health issues. The table below illustrates the figures.

Accordingto the figure, mental health issues ranking fourth, after obesity,diabetes and high blood pressure. Thus, handling this menace is acritical and urgent need. Common mental health issues within thepopulation include anxiety disorders, depression, as well as reducedcases of schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. The people in theRaleigh that are at the highest risk are those who are homeless,victims of crime, and those living in poverty. In addition, there isa rising concern in the mental health area is the emergence ofmarginalized communities, especially those whose percentage in thepopulation is lower, and have low income and representation in thecommunity. In addition, according to the Center for Disease Controldatabase, poor mental health is a common result of issues such asinsecurity, crime, marginalization and low income.

Thefigure shows the county lagging in poverty levels, median income,unemployment, education, homelessness and isolation. These factorsare all contributors to the mental health problems.
Thenature of prevalent mental health disorders in the Raleigh area is ofwide dimensions. Some of them are free standing but some areintegrated in other social-economic issues. In particular, substanceabuse and the related range of mood disorders is one prevalent mentalissue. Another mental issue is the adjustment disorders such as thoseof single parent families (making almost 30% of all families),depressive disorders resulting from poverty, as 1,942 people have nohomes. Anxiety disorders are also prevalent owing to the prevalenthistoric crime ratings and issues of social-economic development. Thebulk of these disorders are affecting vulnerable groups including thepoor (30% of children and 20% others), the single-parent families,the aged, and the un-employed. This is in addition to victims ofcrime and violence (MethodistLe Bonheur Healthcare, 2013).
Raleighcommunity of Memphis is a community located in north Memphis that isemerging in terms of median income, household security,social-economic placement and education above the rest of the Memphismetropolis. It has many attractions including geographic, culturaland recreational, in spite of having a relatively low cost of living.Crime, poverty and insecurity, which have been the major drawbacks tothe Memphis metropolis, are reducing in this area faster than thegeneral Memphis area.
TennesseeState is the home of Memphis area. It is a centrally located state inthe US with an attractive sub-tropical climate. It is a nationalleader in terms of cultural and historical heritage. It also is a hubof national sports. It has a centrally place cost of life index, andboasts a presence of many tourist attractions. Raleigh community,like the Memphis area, has prevalent issues of mental health. Thecausal factors for these include poverty, minority ethnic status, loweducation, homelessness and unemployment.
