Settinga Broadband Connection

A broadbandconnection allows one to access the internet at a fast speed usuallyabove 256Kbps. In fact, a broadband connection allows a user todownload music, video clips, listen to digital clips, and send emailfast since it speeds an internet connection. A broadband connectionallows a user to convey information at up to 40 times the speed of aconventional a dial-up modem. One can connect a PC via broadbandconnection using a TV cable box, a phone line, or via a satellite. However, an ADSL is the most common form of connection, although onecan use a cable TV (Stephenson, 2012). Due to differences in prices,it is important to note the different types of broadband i.e. ISDN,DSL, ADSL modem, or Satellite.

Engineers builtthe first telephone networks to transmit an analog voice by alteringsomeone’s voice into an electrical sign. In this regards, suchphone lines can only transmit data at 56Kbps. However, a DSL (DigitalSubscriber Line) solves this problem by using phone lines to transmitdigital signals directly without altering them to an analog signal. In this regards, a DSL technology allows the transmission ofinformation at advanced rates than a regular modem, it has apermanent connection, and one can use a home phone while stillonline. Although the market has seen a proliferation of differenttypes of DSL, ADSL remains the most common form of DSL. One adds anADSL to a present phone line in conjunction with a special modem. Oneplugs the modem through a USB or an Ethernet connection depending onthe type of the modem. However, in connecting through the Ethernetconnection, one requires a network card.

On the otherhand, a TV cable provide fast internet but requires installation froman external source, which can provide some difficulties. A TV cableuses HFC (Hybrid fibre-coaxial), which means that it does not take upall bandwidth thus, one can use the cable to carry both TV signalsand internet. However, unlike DSL, people have to share theconnection of a cable TV, which means that subscribers on a specifiednode share a fixed amount of bandwidth. In this regards, the speed ofa cable TV depends on how many a single node serves. In installing aconnection via a cable TV, one needs a cable modem, which connects tothe cable and to the PC (Stephenson, 2012). However, the connectionof the modem happens via a USB or an Ethernet connection. Mostavailable cable modems in the market comply with DOCSIS standards.

Unlike DSL,satellite has the same speed for downstream and upstream thus, it ismore suitable for services such as video or audio streaming. In sucha case, one downloads data to a terrestrial base, then to a microwavelink thus, a client must have a standard phone modem and a satelliteto receive the data. Satellite connections come in the form of a2-way service and a wireless connection. A wireless service focusesaround the IEEE 802.11 standard in which there exist fourspecifications. However, of the three specifications i.e. 802.11,802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g, 802.11b usually called WI-FI is themost commonly used specification and runs on a 2.4GHz spectrum andhas a capacity of 11Mbps data.

Recommendationsbefore connecting

It isrecommended that one follow the following steps before connecting aPC to a network

  • If possible connect a PC to hardware-based firewall or a firewall router

  • Turn on the software firewall of the computer to block incoming connections from other computers within a network (Stephenson, 2012)

  • Disable non-essential services such as print sharing and file sharing

    • Click Start -&gt Control Panel.

    • Click and open &quotNetwork and Internet Connections&quot.

    • Click and open &quotNetwork Connections&quot.

    • Right-click on the network connection one wishes to change

    • Click and Select &quotProperties&quot.

    • Uncheck &quotFile and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networking”.

  • Download and install software from trusted sites

Due to the presence of many devices that can connect to wirelessnetworks, setting up the network has become a highly important step. When one sets up a wireless network, every device will connect to theinternet anywhere within the room. Good examples of gadgets that canbe used to connect wireless networks are BGP and Ecessa products. TheBGP devices are outdated but are significantly expensive while Ecessaare lot less in prices.

Before setting up a wireless connection, one must have the following:first, one should have a broadband internet connection and a modem.Secondly, one must have a wireless router and thirdly a networkadapter. A broadband Internet connection is usually a high-speedInternet connection. The most commonly used broadband connections arethe Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable. By contacting anInternet service provider (ISP) one can easily get a broadbandconnection. Most Internet service provider (ISP) providing DSL is thenormal telephone companies. The Internet service provider (ISP)providing cables are cable TV companies. Internet service provider(ISP) also offer broadband modems and in most cases, they install itfor their clients. In other cases, ISPs provides a combination modemor wireless routers. These items can also be easily obtained fromcomputer or other electronics stores. In this regards, one must havethe following items to connect to a broadband

  • A landline connection from an ISP

  • An ADSL router for a single PC one should note that the router requires a USB port

  • Since one has an intel PC running windows XP, the PC must have at least 128 MB of RAM, at least 500 MB of HDD space, USB port for the ADSL router and a CD drive.

The router will be sending information. That is, between onescomputer network and the Internet. When using a wireless router, onecan easily connect computers to a network simply by the use of radiosignals other than wires. Wireless network technologies are ofdifferent types. For instance, there are (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g,and 802.11n). The best will be the router that supports 802.11g or802.11n. This is mainly because the two are fast. Another advantageis that they have a strong wireless signal. In most cases, purchasinga router becomes the first step. Routers are distributed in differentshapes and sizes. It is important for one to select the right routerfor his/her area. For instance, if one wants to cover a big area orhis/her house has many walls he/she will need to select a routerthat has many antennae.

Recall the purpose of the wireless router is to assist one to sharethe broadband internet connection using many devices. Therefore, toshare the broadband internet connection with multiple devices, therouter must be connected to a broadband modem. To achieve a strongsignal, it is advisable to place the router near the modem. Therouter and the modem are connected with an Ethernet cable. In mostcases, one is supplied with a short Ethernet cable when buying therouter. The modem is connected to WAN port on the router. This portis usually color-coded yellow. If one has many computers within theroom or video games console or TV, they can be connected to therouter through the Ethernet. The signal will be stable and theconnection will be faster with no extra configurations. One requiresat least one computer connected through Ethernet cable to help inadjusting the router settings. This computer can be disconnectedthereafter in case one needs to connect wirelessly.

To configure the router, one requires the IP address of the router. In most cases, the IP address is labeled on the router but thereother routers that have their IP addresses packed in thedocumentation. In case the IP address cannot be found anywhere, onecan just search the model of the router on the web and find thedefault address. The IP address is usually formatted into four groupsof three digits and is mainly separated by periods. For instance, some IP addresses might look like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 andothers. To do the configuration, one should open the web browser onhis/her computer. The computer is already connected to the router. The next step after opening the browser is to key in the IP addressand then press enter on the computer. The browser will then connectto the configuration menu of the router. Another method is to use theinstallation disc of the router, in case it is available. The nextstep is to input a valid username and password. Routers come with anaccount that one should log on. These details are labeled on therouter. In case they are not available anywhere, it is easy to findthem on the web using the router model to find out the default log indetails for the router.

After the log in, the router will take one to the main menu. Althoughthere are several options to choose from, this section can be leftjust as default settings are. Otherwise, ISP can give specialinstructions. The name of the wireless network is then entered in thefield labeled &quotname or SSID.&quot In this field, one shouldenter a unique name because other devices will be scanning this namefor the network. One should then check the box with an intention ofenabling the SSID broadcast to turn on the wireless network (Carter,2012). The only thing that will be remaining then is choosing thesecurity method. This is explained in the section below.

Network adapter are devices used to connect a computer to a network. To connect a desktop computer to a wireless network, it is necessaryto have a computer that is installed with a wireless network adapter. Most desktop computers are installed with a wireless network adapterwhen they are bought. If one buys a computer without a wirelessnetwork adapter, it is easy to purchase a wireless adapter from acomputer or any electronics store. It is also easy to install thewireless adapter into ones PC. The best choice of the wirelessadapter is universal serial bus (USB) type because they are usuallysmall. They are also easy to install, and are flexible such that theycan be moved from one computer to another. It is good to ensure thatwhen one buys a wireless network adapter, he/she gets that of thesame type as the wireless router. In most cases type of the wirelessadapter is boldly marked on top of the package, using a letter G or A(Carter, 2012).

Setting up the modem and Internet connection

When one obtains all necessary equipment, there is need to set up themodem and the Internet connection. This is in case the modem was notset up by the Internet service provider (ISP). It is simple to followinstructions in the manual of the modem. The manual shows how toconnect the modem to the computer as well as the Internet. In caseone is using a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), he/she should connectthe modem to a phone jack.

The following steps show how one can connect a PC to a broadbandrevolution via DSL

  • Before setting up the DSL connection one needs a RJ11 port and a cable and a 1 meter RJ45 UTP cable also known as a LAN cable

  • One should connect the phone line to the DSL modem such as VDSL/ADSL/SDSL/RADSL/IDSL depending on the type of a modem one has and connect the other end to a telephone wall jack

  • Plug the LAN cable to the DSL modem from the PC LAN card

  • Connect the power cord to the wall outlet and the DSL modem and the DSL modem status LED will begin to flash

  • Open the browser, in this case Internet Explorer, then open Tools Menu and click on Internet Options

  • One should then choose the second option on setting a connect i.e. connect using a cable or a DSL that requires a password and a username

  • Then, type the username and the password as given by the ISP, connect and click on the Apply button.

Positioningthe wireless router

The wireless router is moved around the room until one identifies theplace where it receives the strongest signal. This is whileminimizing any amount of interference. By following the followingsteps, one can get perfect results:

  • Positioning the wireless router in a central location. One should place the router closer to the center of the room. This increases the strength of the wireless signal.

  • It is always good to position the wireless router above the floor. It is also good to place it away from walls of the room and other metal objects. By minimizing the physical obstructions between the computer and the router`s signal, one increases capability and the router will provide the full signal strength.

  • One should always reduce interference. 802.11g networking equipment mostly make use of 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) of radio frequency. This frequency is similar to the frequency of most microwaves also cordless phones. Therefore, keeping the microwaves on or receiving calls from the cordless phone, the wireless signal is temporarily interrupted (Carter, 2012)

Adding computers to the network

When connecting a desktop computer to a wireless network, one isrequired to follow the following important steps:

  • One must first open Connect to a Network. This is simply by clicking the network icon on the computer shown by the icons shown as &quot( or)&quot in the right hand bottom corner notification area.

  • By clicking on the network icon, it gives one a list of networks. From the list, one should then click the network that one is interested to connect. Then one simply clicks on Connect.

  • The final step is to set the security key. To set up the security key, one can type in the key or one can insert a flash drive containing the security key into the computer’s USB port.

Securingthe wireless network

It is always important to secure ones network. This is mostlyimportant to wireless network. This is because the wireless signalgoes beyond the walls of the house. It is likely that if the networkis not secure, other people who have computers in the neighborhoodwill be accessing the information that is stored in one’s networkcomputers. Therefore, the following should be done to secure onesnetwork:

  • The router should be protected by simply changing the default user name and the default password. Some people could use the information from manufacturer to access ones router without ones knowledge.

  • As indicate in the previous paragraph, it is important to set up or use a USB flash drive to set up a security key the network to avoid any unauthorized access. The following steps should be followed to set up security:

    • One should open the Network and Sharing Center by going to Control Panel. Type network in the search box. Simply click Network and Sharing Center.

    • Then one should click where it is written Set up a new connection.

    • Follow the step and Click Set up a new network, followed by next

There will be a wizard that will take one through several steps ofcreating a network name as well as a security key. Use WPA2, ifpossible since the WPA2 has better security. Then one should writedown the security key on a piece of paper and keep it safe place incase he/she will need it again. Security key can also be saved on aUSB flash drive (Carter, 2012).
