Makinga successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a verybig task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I wasalways frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand theprocess of making a speech or a presentation including coming up witha topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech,research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make amagnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audiencemight sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it wastherefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to theaudience without making any judgments since every person was entitledto a different opinion and views about things.

Ihave also learnt about different types of audiences and speechesincluding persuasive, informative, entertaining and deliveringspecial occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever Iwas making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so withconfidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentationand completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear thatcapturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in thewhole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introductionand also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was thereforevital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values(Lucas, 2011).

Theclass helped me learn how to overcome fear of public speaking whichwas brought about by anxiety and fear which was mainly contributed bylack of exposure. During this class I learnt many ways of overcomingthis menace, the class groups that served as the audience helped inpracticing and getting over the anxiety and fear I also got positivecriticism from my group members. Coming up with persuasive speechesneeded thorough research and thinking, it was necessary to thinkabout the impacts of some of the solutions I came up with for certainproblems. This helped me in learning and developing critical thinkingskills as well as research capabilities which were very vital notonly to my public speaking but also on my entire life.

Duringpresentation and practices many questions and objections were raisedby the audience which at times put me under stress but through thisclass I learnt how to maintain my poise, coolness and judgment anaspect that has helped me gain self confidence enhancing mypersonality and how I relate with other people. Lucas (2011) arguesthat different audiences require different forms of presentation.Therefore, I also had to create the best presentation for my speechesand participating in group presentations with my classmates and thisplayed a great role in improving my presentation skills. For the caseof persuasive speeches it was paramount to convince the audience onthe information I was expressing. I learnt how to convince people andcommunicate effectively via eye contact and body movement techniquesas well as building my persuasion power.

Theclass aided my verbal and non-verbal skills. The hands-on practicesand the professional feedback from the teachers and group memberswere vital. This made me an overall better communicator helping ininteractions with other people and building confidence. In writingand presenting speeches, I had to organize my topic, points and notesand also time. This helped improve my organization skills.

Iacquainted myself with ethical issues concerning the process ofpublic speaking. This included my moral values and personalprinciples as a speaker. During speech presentation it was alwaysgood to avoid presenting another person’s work, ideas or evenlanguage without appropriately citing these sources (Lucas, 2011). Iwas also enlightened on utilizing principles of effective listeningboth as a speaker and audience. I appreciated the different types oflistening that existed and these included emphatic listening,comprehensive listening and critical listening. I noticed that poorlistening could be caused by factors such as lack of concentrationlistening too hard, jumping into conclusions and laying too muchfocus on delivery and appearance. During the whole process, I learnthow to come up with a good and effective public speeches helping mebecome a better listener not only to my colleague’s speeches butalso to my other lectures improving my learning capabilities.

Thereexists different types of audiences and it was good to adopt speechesbased on the analysis of the audience and prevailing speakingscenario. As I learnt from Lucas (2011), audience could be analyzedin terms of gender, culture, ethnicity, race, religion, age or eveneducation. By gathering a lot of information from different sourcesto support my speeches a have been equipped with vast experience inresearch. My mind has been opened to a wide range of diversity as aresult of being a listener to many different types of speeches fromclassmates some of which touched on culture during our presentationpractices in class. From various practices we carried out I wastaught how to use my voice appropriately in delivering my message,how to organize my thoughts logically and how to develop confidenceon stage.

Inconclusion when delivering a public speech it was vital to leave timefor questions and answers. This helped to know if the message wasclearly understood by the audience and would be remembered. Thissection also empowered me to handle questions and answers sectionsince some questions asked by audience were challenging and neededcritical thinking.
